At the end of the study block on the medium size screen (television and domestic screens),
you will submit an argumentative style essay based on ONE of the following essay topics:
Topic One: Serialised Television
What does the term ‘serialised television’ mean and what is it about this mode of
television programming that so readily engages viewers? Your argument should
consider the relevance of the term ‘serialised television’ to contemporary viewers and
refer to the role of narrative progression in the viewing experience. Choose one
television series to support your argument.
Topic Two: The Culture Around Television Viewing
What are some of the changing practices around television viewing? What is unique
about the culture of television viewing today? Your argument should consider where we
watch, how we watch, who we watch with and what we do with television content.
Topic Three: Television as a Live Broadcast Medium
“The only thing television is good for is live broadcasting”. Argue for or against this
statement with reference to at least two live television broadcast texts.
Requirements
Choose the essay topic that most interests you. You will need to conduct initial research in
relation to the topic via the library catalogue and electronic databases to orientate yourself to the subject area. As this is an argumentative essay, you will need to take a firm position in
relation to the topic. Be sure to include relevant theories and concepts covered in the unit.
Your final essay must include the following:
· Standard argumentative essay structure (title page, introduction, body
paragraphs, conclusion, reference list)
· Reference to at least three books (including e-books) and three peer reviewed
journal articles (Please note: two or more references should be required or
