Video Response Essays on Concepts of Biology

Concepts of Biology Biology 100
Video Response Essays
We will watch several videos during the semester. These videos have been chosen to
help illustrate and reinforce concepts we’ve discussed in class. Your job is to write an
essay that clearly and correctly relates topics and concepts learned in class with examples
discussed and illustrated in the video. When writing you should be sure to do the
following:
 Your goal is to relate examples from the video to concepts from lecture. You need to
clearly state those concepts, give a brief, correct explanation of the concepts AND
indicate that they are concepts we have been studying in class. I want you to be
obvious here. You need to say, “We learned in class that…..” You need to show me
that you understand what the relevant concepts are and that you learned about them in
lecture. You will be expected to make connections to two (2) different concepts, using
different examples for each.
 Use actual, specific examples from the video. Do not refer to something as the
“animals in the desert” or the “man in the lab coat”. Instead, be specific, e.g. the
“African elephants in the Kalahari” , or the “Swedish researcher, Lars Lundgren”.
 Make a clear, correct connection between each stated concept and one or more
examples from the video. You need to clearly explain the example and how that
particular example illustrates that specific concept. You also need to be sure the
example you use and the explanation you provide correctly illustrates the concept
you’ve chosen.
When writing your essay, I suggest you organize it as two paragraphs. In each paragraph
you will state and briefly describe a course concept and then describe and connect an
example from the video that illustrates that concept. Each paragraph will focus on a
different concept that will be illustrated by different examples.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you fail to clearly and correctly define a concept, then there is no
way you can make a clear connection to it. If you look at the rubric below, you will see
that a failure to clearly define the concept will earn 0 points in that category. It also means
you will earn 0 points for the connection category – you can’t make a connection to a
concept that you didn’t describe.
I realize that some of these requirements differ from the standard essay format. That
doesn’t mean you still don’t need to use correct grammar. You need to use complete,
proper sentences that are organized in a coherent manner and clearly convey the required
information. If I can’t figure out what you’re trying to say, I can’t give you credit for the
assignment. You also need to make sure the words you choose are used and spelled
correctly and all of your sentences begin with capital letters and have periods at the end.
All essays should be at least 250 words in length and no more than 500 words. Each is
worth 25 points.
